Heavy rock is probably not the first thing that comes to mind whenever Wales is mentioned, unless you're a die hard Budgie fan, of course. Cardiff based EULOGY is a power trio formed in early 2017, and released their three track debut EP "Back to Life" already in December the same year. After their debut, EULOGY have been streamed no less than 200.000 times on Spotify, which itself should be an indication of success, and they spent 2018 on stages within and beyond the Welsh borders. A new track, "Blood Red Skies" was released in November 2019 as a teaser from their then upcoming sophomore EP "Memento Mori", which has now been out for almost a month on One Eyed Toad Records.

After their success with "Back to Life", the lads in EULOGY wanted to explore a darker and heavier sound on their next release. Whereas the debut had a melodic, energetic and feelgood vibe, the four tracks on "Memento Mori" sure are darker around the edges. Mike Williams' guitars are heavier and more fierce, have quite an amount of low-end, and with Neil Thomas providing the even deeper frequencies with his bass he creates an almost impenetrable wall of powerchord oriented riffs.

The opening track "Cross to Bare" introduces the darker side of EULOGY. In terms of composition it is a fairly straight forward tune, but the genre in which this Welsh power trio operates there has never been focus on anything else but energy and power, something this track suffers no shortage from. Thomas' vocals have a raw Blackie Lawness-ish feel that to this listener fits really well.

"You'll Die Alone" is another track that was released as a single, and with its emphasis on melody and vast quantities of catchy hooks it is what many would probably call a perfect choice for a single. The lyrical theme on "Corvid" is based around the final moments before death, just before the soul's departure of the soul. Tempowise it is faster and balances on the edge between heavy rock and metal.

"Blood Red Skies" was mentioned further up in the article, and also contains the ingredients that make up a natural choice for a single. The riffs are once again more melodic than on the non-single tracks, and the song sounds overall a bit 80's inspired.

EULOGY have been set for touring throughout 2020 to support their most recent release, so if you get the chance to catch them somewhere along their trek across Great Britain, be sure to pay them a visit.

ALBUM REVIEW: Silent Agreement - From the Amusement Park

SILENT AGREEMENT are a foursome of musicians that since their live debut in 2018 have made quite an impact on their local hard rock scene in Germany. Their performances have given the band a reputation of being a very energetic live act, and after having achieved this highly valued merit the band entered the studio to record the EP that we're having a closer look at today.

Very little information was given to me about the band themselves, apart from links and production info, but we'll focus on the main feature itself; the music.

SILENT AGREEMENT's first addition to their discography is an EP that sounds like the band has found a lot of inspiration from their genre's 70's era. Albeit their expression is a dirty and unpolished one, "From the Amusement Park" has received a modern and powerful production treatment.

The three tracks on the band's first studio effort are loaded with riffs that often prove that less is more. For instance, the riff that is the basis of the opening track "Solid" is far from the most innovative of riffs, but serves in all its simplicity as a powerful momentum that gives the track a heavy, almost stoner-like drive. Simple, but effective.

"Dream World" and "Judas" are more upbeat than the opening track, and the introductory riff on the former is a treat you don't want to miss. The chorus is one that stays in the back of your head long after you played it, and the instrumental middle section is a curious little anti climax in a song like this. "Judas" has a bit of a funky approach that comes as a bit of a surprise, but nevertheless an interesting feature on a track that concludes the nearly twelve minutes of music on SILENT AGREEMENT's debut EP.

ALBUM REVIEW: Battering Ram - Battering Ram

BATTERING RAM is a Swedish four piece constellation that wholeheartedly fulfill the promise that their band name makes. That being said, I am sure it's already apparent what we're having to do with here, but let's have a closer look anyway, shall we?

Formed in late 2017, the band consists of Johan, Jonas, Jocke and Tony, who have made it their collective mission to create rock music that makes you feel good. As the name clearly indicates their art is of the hard hitting kind, and the nine tracks that make up their self titled debut are all melodic and powerful hard rock anthems with a punch that makes a fist to the face feel like a goddamn cottonball.

BATTERING RAM at times sound like a hybrid of Mustasch, Anvil, Anthrax and Volbeat with a dash of Mötley Crue and Poison. In other words, it has all the ingredients that make you want to move. It's difficult to pick favorites, but "Taking My Time", the groovy "Stronger Forever" and "Chase the Fire" are just a few selections from this 41 minute bulldozer of a hard rock album.

"Battering Ram" is far from being a complex record, and very often that's exactly what the doctor ordered. The production on the album is fairly loud, but then again, that's the only way to play it!

Now, do yourself a favor and check out BATTERING RAM while I go and crack a beer.

SINGLE REVIEW: JP2 - Hope

JP2, or Javier Perez as is his real name, has been mentioned on this blog page earlier, after the release of his debut single "Walk Alone" in June last year. The track received a lot of promising feedback, including a whopping 8/10 star rating by yours truly. The track stood out as one of the absolute most memorable moments from 2019, and naturally this writer did indeed sense a slight anticipation whilst clicking on the "play" button.

From the very top of the track, "Hope" appears to be an indication that Perez himself has moved in a heavier direction from where he stood on his first single. The riffs are thicker and form a rock solid foundation underneath glimmering electronics and lead guitars that appear to be one of the things that have become typical to JP2's expression.

The chorus has a somewhat similar feel as that on "Walk Alone", although without any further comparison. Perez has evolved his ability to write functional and efficient melodies and riffs, and his voice sounds stronger and more confident on his latest single.

In many ways a very different endeavour from JP2 this time. But still, the ever so slight change of scenery only confirms the musical versatility that Javier Perez possesses, because on his most recent single he seems to feel right at home.

SINGLE REVIEW: First Revival - Twisted Mind

FIRST REVIVAL (Sweden)

From Luleå in the north of Sweden comes a four-piece band that has endured several line-up transformations during its short existence. Initially a quintet, the band that was later to become FIRST REVIVAL was formed in the spring of 2016 with another name and a different line-up, and released an EP that had a more modern sound than what they have today.

FIRST REVIVAL's first release with the current line-up was the single we're having a closer look at today, "Twisted Mind". It shows a band that is clearly inspired by 70's heavy rock, but chooses to honor it in a more modern sounding manner.

A quick description of the track could be that it is like listening to Motörhead playing an Anvil track with Tom G. Warrior (Hellhammer/Celtic Frost/Triptykon) on vocals. Never really a demanding track to lend the ears to, but the riffs are sharp and to the point, and the song as a whole is well arranged and has a catchy drive.

The band is currently recording their first full-length album, set for release some time in the spring of 2020, and if FIRST REVIVAL maintains the sound and quality that their debut single has, then I dare to predict they're heading for success.

ALBUM REVIEW: Projekt Gemineye - In the Year 3073 - Book I

PROJEKT GEMINEYE (Canada)
"In the Year 3073 - Book I"

Release date: October 25th 2019
Genre: Progressive rock, melodic heavy rock

Not more than just a few weeks have passed since PROJEKT GEMINEYE were featured on these humble blog pages, when the single "Magic World" was released. The song was the first of two teasers from the album we are having a look at today, and marked a slight change in this Canadian solo project's sound.

Mark Anthony K., who is the primus motor and sole member of PROJEKT GEMINEYE, has been an active musician for many years and was also part of bands like Reckon With One and The Exalted Piledriver before founding his solo effort.

Just over two and a half years have passed since Mark Anthony K. released his solo debut "An Ordinary Day" in March 2017. The album helped him gain a faithful group of supporters that are thriving within the Projekt Gemineye Facebook group where the maestro himself keeps his fans updated on anything relevant to his project. "A Brand New Day" came out towards the end of 2017, an album that along with the debut could be considered a soundtrack to a series of personal events.

Just a few months after the follow-up was released, Mark Anthony K., or Mark Kopernicky as is his real name, announced that he had already started working on his third album.
Said Kopernicky: "It is not a concept album, but a collection of songs, and the lyrics are based around two kind of topics. One is the approach of science in the world today, and the other about people who are looked at as dreamers, and what approaches they have in bettering the world."

"Man of Science, Man of Dreams" came out in November 2018 and featured five compositions that all had all the basic ingredients that early on were determined as the very essence of PROJEKT GEMINEYE's music. Heavy riffs, melodic and harmonic lead guitars and a lot of 70's synth patches that create a fuller and atmospheric expression. As from the beginning the songwriting was still in constant development, the tracks were longer and experimental, but on "Man of Science, Man of Dreams" PROJEKT GEMINEYE had an overall darker, warmer sound than before.

A christmas single was released just a month after, and as a special surprise to his followers Kopernicky announced a four track EP with leftover tracks from the "Man of Science, Man of Dreams" sessions. As was the christmas single "The Lost Science Files" was only released in digital format, but there are some great tracks on there that I am very sure any PROJEKT GEMINEYE supporter would appreciate on a physical format as well.

Not even a year after "Man of Science, Man of Dreams" came out, Kopernicky is back with his fourth album effort, "In the Year 3073 - Book I". Even though every album up until now has either had a storyline or been directed towards certain topics, but this is the first to actually be of a conceptual nature.

This tells the story of a group of scientists and military people who are being forced to leave Earth due to the disastrous concequences of mankind's behavior. The year is 2073, and the end of the world as we know it is imminent. A thousand years later a group of their descendants decide to head back to Earth to document its fate, and this is where the story takes a rather dramatic turn.

The album's first track is the ten minute "Let Your Spirit Fly". The first few seconds send this writer's thoughts towards Vangelis and Alan Parson's Project before the introduction of acoustic guitar chords and the essential harmonic lead guitars that became a PROJEKT GEMINEYE trademark already on "An Ordinary Day". Eventually the album's production becomes more apparent, and especially the drums sound tighter, clearer and crispier than ever before.

Kopernicky has brought with him a couple guest musicians on "In the Year 3073 - Book I", the first appearing already in the first chorus. Joe Bailey is a UK based solo musician with a number of releases on his list of merits, and operates within the fields of alternative/neo-progressive rock. He should therefore fit very well with the style that PROJEKT GEMINEYE represents. He adds a voice that sounds right at home in a project that has never had any outside input to it, and out of the two guest appearances on the album Bailey's appearance becomes the most prominent one.

As mentioned earlier "Magic World" was the first single from the album, and was reviewed somewhere else on this blog. You can read more about it here.

"Heavy Hearts" could be the heaviest PROJEKT GEMINEYE song to date. The guitar tone is thick and aggressive, and the riffs provide a solid and steady foundation for the lead guitars and keyboards to swell upon.

"Children of Hope" is the ballad alternative among the six tracks on the album, and features the use of piano, another contribution of Bailey's vocals, and also David Donley's guest appearance on bass guitar. Donley has worked with musicians affiliated with David Bowie among others, and is a well-renowned musician in the UK.

"The Keepers of the Past" was the second song to be presented prior to the album's release. A seven minute track with a bass and drum intro that develops into a song with clear references to late 80's early 90's Rush. Catchy verses and choruses, and a middle section that suddenly turns the track into an odd-time signature frenzy. Another solid track that is the third and last on the album to feature the vocal talents of Joe Bailey.

As on the first two albums, "In the Year 3073 - Book I" also concludes with an instrumental track. "No Turning Back" is an uptempo feast of harmonic guitars and guitar solos, and provides a very strong closure to an album that allows the listener to experience new details with every spin.

PROJEKT GEMINEYE has been featured at length on these blog pages before. Mark Anthony K. has released three full length albums since the inception of his one man project in 2017, and according to reliable sources the fourth one, "In the Year 3073 - Book I" is already completed and ready for release.

This very productive Canadian has gained a devoted bunch of supporters via his own PROJEKT GEMINEYE Facebook group where he keeps his fans updated on his musical endeavours, and according to the feedback given by his anticipated supporters the new album is already long overdue.

The first single to be released from the album is the seven (!) minute track "Magic World", and shows a PROJEKT GEMINEYE that is still exploring new grounds, without straying too far from the direction that the earlier material went in. The basis is still very heavy rock oriented, but with the addition of acoustic guitars, soaring keyboards and odd time signatures it turns into a more tasty affair.

The production has more clarity than what the previous album "Man of Science...Man of Dreams" had, which was rather heavy on the low end frequencies. At the same time it had material that fit well in this part of the spectre, and all in all it was an enjoyable effort that earned a well deserved 8/10 in this writer's humble review somewhere else on this blog.

All in all, "Magic World" is a very fresh sounding first impression from PROJEKT GEMINEYE's fourth album, and if you are already familiar with what this solo project is all about you know this single only adds to the anticipation that is already there.
